3rd District Candidate Herrera is Not Taking Her Own Financial Advice

GOP candidate Jaime Herrera, who’s running against Democrat Denny Heck in the 3rd Congressional District (SW Washington), may have turned one blunder into another.

First blunder, in yesterday’s On Other Blogs Today, we nodded to the Olympian’s story about Jaime Herrera’s flip-flop on social security. During a lightning-round Q&A at a primary candidate forum in Lewis County, Herrera indicated that she supported privatizing it. But then, her spokesman clarified to Olympian reporter Brad Shannon that she actually doesn’t support privatization. She just misunderstood the question; she thought the moderator was asking if people should get tax breaks for investing in 401(k)s and IRAs, the Herrera campaign says. (Watch the video of the Q&A in today’s Fizz.)

Herrera raised her “yes” placard enthusiastically because, her spokesman says, “when Herrera speaks to groups, she consistently encourages young people to invest in their own 401-k’s and IRA’s like she has done.”

But we think she may have goofed again. Herrera, 31, actually doesn’t invest in a 401-k or an IRA. At least according to her financial disclosure statement, a document all candidates have to file outlining personal finances. The disclosure statement, which covers Herrera’s finances up to May 19th, doesn’t list any retirement accounts at all.

I have a call in to the Herrera campaign.

This, of course, is the kind of tripe we should be expecting from our prospective chameleon congresswoman, who would do or say anything to anyone to get elected.

It's also indicative of someone with a paper-thin level of experience in politics.

Caveat emptor, people.
